Shot Discus Quiz

Welcome to the Shot Discus Quiz for prospective East Idaho Youth Track officials. Its purpose is to test/prepare individuals to serve as knowledgeable, qualified meet officials. The quiz consists of 25 True/False questions. The quiz is open-book, but not open-person. Most of the answers come from the 2017 NFHS Track & Field Rules Book. You must pass the quiz with a score of 23 or higher to be certified to officiate Shot Put (and Discus) events as a paid Head Event Judge. You may take the quiz a maximum of 2 times in order to achieve a passing score.

The angle of the throwing sectors (in degrees) for the shot put and discus events is the same.

7.

Thrower A makes a mighty throw but loses his balance and stumbles out of the back half of the ring a split second after the implement lands in the sector. This is a foul throw because he must leave the ring with his body totally under control.

8.

After executing a fair throw but before the official has ruled it fair or foul, Shot Putter A stops and taps his foot on top of the toe board before exiting through the back half of the ring. This is a foul.

9.

Thrower A, after entering the circle and before beginning his throw, accidentally drops his implement. He stops, picks up the implement, pauses within the circle, and then begins his throwing motion. This is fair throw to this point and he should be allowed to continue his attempt.

10.

The measurement standard for recording length of discus throws and shot puts is the same: i.e., the measurement should be recorded to the nearest lesser inch or centimeter.

16.

The measurements of both the shot put and discus throws are made from the nearest edge of the first mark made by the implement to the inside edge of the throwing circle nearest such mark. To achieve this, the measuring tape is held at one end by an event judge at the nearest edge of the first mark made by the implement and at the other end by an event judge holding the tape so that it crosses the center of the circle. The head event judge records the distance where the tape crosses the inside edge of the throwing circle.
